Why Should We Recycle?

Recycling is an essential part of preserving our environment and conserving natural resources. It offers an effective way to reduce the amount of waste that would otherwise need to be incinerated and deposited in landfills. Furthermore, recycling helps to extend the lifespan of Semakau Landfill, which is Singapore’s only offshore landfill, by turning waste materials into useful products. Recycling also helps to reduce the amount of energy used in the production process, as well as the emissions of greenhouse gases, helping to reduce the impact of climate change. It is an important factor in developing a more sustainable future, and one which we should all strive to support.

The act of recycling is a valuable practice in preserving the environment. It is interesting to note that 1,000kg of paper recycled equates to saving 17 trees, while recycling an aluminum can can reduce energy usage by up to 95%. Additionally, recycling a glass bottle can result in up to 30% energy savings compared to creating a new one.

In 2018, 4.63 million tonnes of waste was recycled, representing more than half of the total amount generated. Singapore has set a goal of reaching a 70% recycling rate by 2030, involving a rise of the domestic recycling rate from 22% to 30% and an increase in the non-domestic recycling rate from 74% to 80%.
